The Coaching Corner
All of the coaches at Bishop Sutton Tennis Club are qualified LTA Teaching Professionals.
Coaching is available for all levels of ability and age groups and in a variety of different formats; from individual one-on-one sessions, to group coaching or match analysis sessions and video analysis. Ron Grew - Tennis Manager
- 20 years of coaching experience being head coach at 5 other clubs in the county before coming to BSTC.
- Coached BaNES squads as well as the Avon county squads.
- Joined BSTC in 2000 where I have put together a comprehensive development program for both adults and juniors creating teams for every age.
- Diploma in sports psychology.
- Voluntary work includes assessor for Duke of Edinburgh award scheme
- Since my time at the club I have seen it grow from 300 to over 800 members with the juniors making up over 300 of the total
Duncan Grew - Development Coach
- Been in tennis since the age of 6 representing the county in various age groups up to the age of 18. Winner of the Avon junior county closed and Avon Schools Under 19 singles.
- Moved to US to further my tennis development being awarded a tennis scholarship at a university in South Carolina. Was named team captain and also gained various awards from the conference committee for my standard of play.
- Attained coaching qualifications in the US in 2005
- Been coaching for 7 years, 4 of which as an assistant.
- Recently moved back to the UK and started to work at BSTC as Development Coach, being appointed senior men’s team captain. My role is to expand the development programme and improve all standards of play.
Matthew Thompson - Senior Coach
- I have been working at Bishop Sutton for 3 years and have been a qualified licensed coach for 4 years.
- I Coach in the local primary schools in the summer terms and run the mini tennis programme at the club.
- When I joined the Club there were 2 mini Tennis groups on a Friday night, I have seen this develop into 8 groups throughout the week.
- One of my main goals for the up and coming year will be to introduce performance tennis academies for kids who show signs of greater potential, allowing us to focus their abilities.
- The plan for BSTC is to introduce more schools into our programmes thus trying to develop greater tennis awareness and development in our region.
